Locksmith or Dealership for a Replacement Car Key?

Whether a locksmith or a dealer is the better route depends on the exact vehicle and key. Confirm both before choosing.

Neither a locksmith nor a dealership is always the better choice for a replacement car key. A mobile car locksmith can often cut and program a key where the vehicle is parked, which may avoid a tow. A dealership may be necessary for vehicles or keys the locksmith cannot support. The right choice depends on your exact vehicle, whether you still have a working key, how soon you need it and the completed price each one quotes.

A1 All Locksmith DMV provides mobile car key replacement and programming for supported vehicles from Gaithersburg. Call 240-701-6448 with the year, make and model to check compatibility before you decide.

How do the two options compare?

Use this table to compare the same job from both sides. It describes typical differences in how the service works, not a promise for every vehicle or every provider.

Factor Mobile car locksmith Dealership
Where the work happens Usually where the vehicle is parked Usually at the dealer’s service department
Getting the vehicle there Not needed if the job is supported on site May require driving it in, or a tow if no key works
Vehicle coverage Depends on the locksmith’s equipment and available keys; confirm your exact vehicle The brand it sells; some keys or procedures may be available only through the manufacturer’s network
Key parts OEM or aftermarket, depending on the vehicle and the provider; ask which Usually manufacturer parts
Timing Depends on technician availability and whether the key is in stock Depends on service appointments and whether the key must be ordered
Price Quote for the completed job; ask what is included Quote for the completed job; add towing or transport if needed

The comparison that matters is the total cost and time to a working key, including how the vehicle gets to the work.

When a locksmith may be the practical option

A mobile locksmith is worth calling first when:

  • The vehicle cannot be driven because no working key remains, and towing it would add cost and time.
  • You need an additional key and the locksmith confirms it supports your vehicle and key type.
  • The vehicle is at home, at work or in a garage and you prefer the work done there.

For example, some older vehicles use a mechanical key that only needs cutting. Vehicles with a transponder chip or a remote also need programming. Those are different jobs with different prices, so describe your key accurately.

A key that only needs cutting is a different job from a key that must also be programmed. Tell the provider which type your vehicle uses.

When to check with the dealer

Ask the dealership too when:

  • The locksmith says your vehicle or key system is not supported on site.
  • The vehicle is under warranty and you want to understand how the manufacturer’s network handles keys for it.
  • You have a recall, a starting problem or electrical fault that may need diagnosis beyond the key.

A1 tells you on the phone if your vehicle needs dealer-level equipment that is not available during a mobile visit. That answer should come before any trip charge, not after the technician arrives.

Compare the total, not the price of the key

A quote for a key or fob alone is not a quote for a working key. Ask each provider for the completed price of the same job:

  1. Is this for copying a working key, or for replacing a key when none remains?
  2. Does the price include the key or fob, cutting and programming?
  3. Does it include opening the vehicle, if it is locked?
  4. For the dealer: how will the vehicle get there, and what does a tow cost?
  5. For the locksmith: is the mobile visit included in the total?
  6. Are applicable fees and taxes included, and what could change the price?
  7. How long until I have a working key, including any ordering time?

If you lost every key, our guide to lost car keys with no spare lists what to prepare before calling. If you still have one working key, see spare car keys with chips, which explains why a copy may also need programming.

Questions to ask either provider

  • Can you make and program a key for my exact year, make and model?
  • Is the key an original manufacturer part or aftermarket?
  • What proof of ownership do you need? Registration or title plus photo ID is typical.
  • Will you test starting, locking and remote functions with me before I pay?
  • What happens if the key stops working shortly after the service?

A locksmith or dealer who will make a key without checking ownership is not offering a shortcut. It is a security risk for every vehicle owner.

Common questions

Is a locksmith always cheaper than the dealer?

Not always. A mobile locksmith can save the tow and the trip, but the price depends on the vehicle, the key type and whether a key remains. Compare written totals for the same completed job.

Will a locksmith-made key work like the original?

A correctly cut and programmed compatible key should start the vehicle and operate the functions included in the job. Ask which functions are included and test them before the technician leaves.

Can I buy a key online and have it programmed?

Sometimes. Some keys bought online have the wrong chip or were already paired to another vehicle and cannot be reused. Tell the locksmith the exact key you bought before booking the visit.

Does the dealer need the vehicle present?

Ask the dealer. Requirements vary by manufacturer and by job, and programming normally needs the vehicle.
